Cheap Rooftop Tent

Rooftop tents are not cheap… and after you just got your Jeep, there’s usually not much left.  Here’s a great hack for a budget rooftop tent which saves not only money but time!

“I love overlanding, but hate packing up afterwards.”  Sound familiar?  Here’s an email from Steve who discovered a budget rooftop tent for his Jeep Rubicon:

“This idea came to me a little while ago.  I have installed a Smittybilt SRC roof rack and attached a 7′ basket to the top of my Jeep.   The problem is finding a rooftop tent to fit on it, without breaking the bank.  Enter the SansBug single

I have not taken it out on a trial trip yet, but can hardly wait.

Thanks,

Steve

…Showed my buddy the pics and now he’s looking for one to put in the bed of his truck!”

So now you can have a rooftop tent for about $100, and $55 without the rainfly!  How much more cheap can you get?

Arksen and Mockins are some brands that manufacture 84″ long rooftop baskets.

While some manufacturers claim their $20,000 hardtop tents are bearproof, the safest way to camp in bear country is to avoid attracting bears with food.  That means keeping your tent free of food odours, storing clothing that you cooked in and food in airtight containers, and suspending food high off the ground between two trees if bear-resistant storage facilities are not available.  Rooftop tents may give you a few seconds to reach for your bear spray during a bear attack but ultimately it makes no difference to a bear who knows there’s food in your tent and wants to get in whether it’s an expensive hardtop or a cheap rooftop tent.
